How to add a watermark to a PDF

  1. Open your PDF

The first page appears as a live preview.

  2. Create the watermark

Type your text or choose an image such as a logo, then set font, size and colour.

  3. Position it

Centre it, tile it across the page, or tuck it into a corner. Set the angle and opacity.

  4. Apply and save

Choose which pages to stamp and download the watermarked PDF.

Key features

Text or logo

Use any short text, or a PNG with a transparent background for a clean logo watermark.

Live preview

See the watermark on your actual page as you change settings, before anything is written to the file.

Tiled pattern

Repeat the watermark across the whole page, which makes it much harder to crop out of a screenshot.

Works on rotated pages

Pages that are stored sideways still get an upright, correctly placed watermark.

How effective is a watermark?

A watermark is a deterrent and a label, not a lock. It tells readers a document is a draft or confidential and discourages casual copying. Someone determined, with PDF editing software, can remove an added watermark. To make removal harder, you can flatten the PDF afterwards, or protect it with a password using Protect PDF.

The standard PDF fonts cover Western European languages. If your text uses other characters, such as Polish, Greek or Japanese letters, it is added as a high-resolution image so it still displays correctly.

Security and privacy

Add Watermark runs entirely in your browser. Your file is processed in this tab’s memory and never uploaded to PDF365 or anyone else. When you close the tab or press “Start over”, the data is discarded.
