Is a visual signature legally valid?

In the UK, electronic signatures, including a typed name or an image of a signature, are generally capable of being legally binding for most everyday documents, such as consent forms, quotes and many contracts. Some documents have special rules: deeds, for example, usually need a witness, and certain government and property transactions have their own processes.

A visual signature shows intent to sign, but it doesn’t cryptographically prove who signed or that the document is unchanged. A certificate-based digital signature does both; PDF365 doesn’t create those. Our guide to electronic and digital signatures explains the difference, and how to sign a PDF without printing it covers the built-in options on Mac, iPhone, Windows and Android. This is general information, not legal advice; if in doubt, ask the person requesting your signature or a solicitor.

Security and privacy

Sign PDF runs entirely in your browser. Your file is processed in this tab’s memory and never uploaded to PDF365 or anyone else. When you close the tab or press “Start over”, the data is discarded.

Signatures are sensitive. Yours is drawn, rendered and embedded entirely on your device and is discarded when you leave the page. Consider flattening the signed PDF before sending it.
